A few days later, on the 18th, we did another gig, this time at a big old flat in Lisbon, where each room was a venue, kind of an independent party that lasted through out the night.

related posts:
3 improvisation gigs
Pocketbook of Lightning live at Oficinas do Convento, 29-03-2008
Pocketbook of Lightning live at Musicbox (Lisbon)16 of May
my 2006

Feminine

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 260px; height: 260px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/SSW9h4St7jI/AAAAAAAAAR8/ydokGA7z9cY/s400/feminine+++mp3-com+texto.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270827328651259442" />
I've been working on the music for "Feminine", a choreography by Paulo Ribeiro, since the beggining of May, but the most intense period was the second half of June. By the 6th of July the music was ready, featuring my wife Cathrin Loerke singing and the voice of Richard Zenith reading some texts that the portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa originnaly wrote in english. Richard is one of the great specialists on Pessoa's work and the texts i used were selected by him. Cathrin, apart from the singing, did all the graphic design work for "Feminine". The music has a flavour of the 70's rock, as requested by Paulo Ribeiro, and all instruments are played by myself. There is a very nice guitar solo "Santana style" that i realy enjoy! The cherry on the icecream is the song "Oh long before" (Cathrin singing) - couldn't it be a hit?

click here to listen to it: oh long before

I met Lulu!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/SSW0FLHRDwI/AAAAAAAAAR0/WAE08SIqGxw/s400/alexandra.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270816939882647298" />
From 8 to 15 of June, one more period working on songs for Lulu. This time Mark came with Alexandra Sarramona, who will perform the role of Lulu. (Brussels, 3 and 4/11/2007)). If in Brussels we performed with a large group of dancers, at OdaGuarda it was just a concert, though we kept more or less the same frame for improvisation, directed by myself on the spot with gestures. Unfortunatelly there wasn't much audience since the gig was the same night Portugal football team played against Turkey for the European Cup. Anyway, we decided to call this sextet "The Dalton Brothers" because of the height of the musicians: João Martins is Joe Dalton, Ricardo Freitas is Jack Dalton, Emido Buchinho is William Dalton, Miguel Cabral is Averell; i'm still fighting with Ulrich Mitzlaff to decide which of us is Lucky Luke and Rantanplan.

Performing the space @ Alkantara festival

remake of my performance in December 2007 (see related post it will be what we make it, this time within the frame of Alkantara festival, Lisbon, May 27. During this intense working period at my studio we came up with 3 new songs: "it's time", "where is your force" and "too young to die". The piece will premiere in November at theatre Pole Sud in Strasbourg.

related posts:
Mark Tompkins in Lisbon
lulu: some more songs

3 concerts of "Nazaré, not the town but the woman"

Arriving from Toulouse on April 23, i had a rehearsal that same night with the german singer Katharina Franck to prepare our concerts for the next 3 days in Portugal. So, on the 24th we performed "Nazaré, not the town but the woman" at Culturgest (a big concert hall in Lisbon), on the 25th we performed it at Teatro Viriato (Viseu) and on the 26th we played it at Moagem, in Fundão. This spokenword concert tells the story of a woman during the period of the revolution in Portugal which happened on the 25th of April 1974. This piece was originnaly a comission from Deutsche Bayern 3 Radio and premiered live in Berlin one year ago. Since Katharina lived in Portugal for 9 years, she's able to speak perfect portuguese and so, fot these concerts, the story was translated from its original german version to portuguese. The concert at Culturgest was broadcasted live on national radio Antena 2.

related posts:
Nuno Rebelo + Katharina Franck, live at Akademie der Kunste, Berlin
Nazaré - nicht die Stadt, die Frau

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/RecBUcS7IgI/AAAAAAAAADk/1q9FcnCR06Y/s320/KF.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036996158941766146" />

From 14 to 23 April 2008:“Audible movement, visible sound” in Toulouse, France

Mark Tompkins and I have been teaching together this workshop which focuses the grey zones of cross-path and contamination of the performing body regarding movement and sound making, in a context of improvisation – or real time composition. We started in 2000 and have done it three times in Vienna, Strasbourg, Lisbon and Bucarest,and Lubljana. Now we did it in Toulouse. It’s always a great adventure for me to be involved in this workshop, since I get in touch with myself in terms of body performance. This is an area that for years was unknown to me and that I could never imagine that I had any talent at all to do it… But doing this teaching with Mark since 2000 (or should I say training?), I’m getting more and more confortable in doing it; plus, Mark and the dancers who participate give me very encouraging feedback on this matter. Last year in Ljubljana I felt for the first time very comfortable to improvise as a “mover”, now I want more, more, more of this!

related posts: my 2006

Lost & Foundlive at Bijou, Toulouse, 17 & 18 April

While in Toulouse for the workshop, we did two gigs with our duo Lost & Found.
This duo started in 2006. It’s a kind of a pocket version of our band “Mark Lewis & the Standards”. We play some of the songs of the Standards with different arrangements and we use videos that I did both as visual background and soundtrack. But we also did some original songs and later the Standards started to play these too. So it works both ways. So far, this duo played in Vienna, Ljubljana, Berlin, Girona, Paris, Terrassa (Spain) and now in Toulouse. More, he says, even before his book, this was the title of a poem of one of his friends.
"Pocketbook of Lightning", the duo of Nuno Rebelo + Marco franco, has nothing to do with this, except for the fact that's where they picked the name for their duo. Although i composed the music for it already one year ago, the première was yesterday at Monumental cinema in Lisbon. There was a good audience that seemed to enjoy the film; personally i got excelent comments about my music - of course most of them were from close friends, nevertheless it made me feel quite well :) The music features Miguel Leiria Pereira on doublebass and Paulo Galão on clarinet and myself on guitars and adicional instruments. This will be a musical choreographed by him and we're working together on the songs. Orchestral arrangements, beautiful songs. During this period we came up with 4 more songs ("you will dance", "circus of passions", what shall i do now" and "half a million". During this period we worked on a project of abstract electroacoustics, myself on piezzo microphones and feedbacks and Ludo processing my sounds with laptop. Dued to the unpredictable and wild nature of the sound material we work with, we called this project "tame the beast". On friday 14 of December we presented this project live at Compilothèque, a very charming club for experimental music in Brussels. We opened the night and our concert went very well. In the same night there were 3 more projects performing: Wrapped In (Giovanni di Domenico - keyboards; Lynn Cassiers - vocals), who did a magic and intimate concert; Os meus shorts (Nico Roig - guitar; Joachim Badenhorst - bassclarinet; João Lobo - drums), my favorites of the night; and Pan Pan, a trio who presented a very pleasant, joyfull and hillarious performance to close a perfect night. I was surprised and happy to meet the young and talented portuguese drummer João Lobo there. We had played before and we took this coincidence to play a short impro in duo also this same night at Compilotheque. A great pleasure!

2 concerts as guest musician of Wordsong

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R8WOpgXZTdI/AAAAAAAAALM/LmP0c7DlCxo/s400/wordsonglive.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5171696590818725330" />
on the 8 of December, a Wordsong concert in Brussels at Palais des Beaux Arts, with me and Vitor Rua as guest musicians. The whole thing turned out to be focused around the space itself, the history of Alkantara and possible futures for it. There was a wide range of programming, from cinema showings to performances, from cooking to party, from video instalations to concerts, from debates to conferences, etc. I'll focus here on what i've done during this time.

On Friday 16 November I proposed the screening of Edgar Pêra's film "Evazion LX94", featuring Robert Anton Wilson, Rudy Rucker and Terence Mckenna, one of my favorite films ever.

I participated twice in the kitchen activities, together with Carlos Pez. First, on Friday 23 of November, we cooked for 30 people: us + our guests, invited to debate possible futures for Alkantara and this space.

<img style= "margin:0px auto 10px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R1hLjz6BeJI/AAAAAAAAAKU/iai5o6hsaZM/s320/nuno+carlos+cooking.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140942053244500114" />
The second occasion was Saturday 24 of November. The public was supposed to bring any kind of ingredients and we cooked non-stop since 19h30m to 23h, having presented a wide variety of delicious and spontaneous recipes (with the help of the volunteer girls from Alkantara who choped a lot of onion and also cooked some goodies).

<img style= "margin:0px auto 10px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R1hLjT6BeHI/AAAAAAAAAKE/LR5wAO78Cwk/s320/kitchen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140942044654565490" />
This night was called "goodnight and good luck" and featured 2 performances by Sasa Asentic, a conference on alternative architecture by Marc Neelen and Anna Dzokic and a duo concert by myself (on electric guitar) and Tarek Atoui (on electronics).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R1iZRD6BeLI/AAAAAAAAAKk/Wf63JTxpFxg/s400/nuno+tarek.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141027493028919474" />
On wednsday 28 of November, Federica Porello organized a Jam session with students from a few dance and performing arts schools in Lisbon. I invited Ricardo Freitas (bass guitar) and Miguel Cabral (homemade percussions) to join Tarek and myself on the musical side of the Jam.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R1itnD6BeOI/AAAAAAAAAK8/uH6_0zNMLF8/s400/jam+session.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141049861218597090" /> “The Future is Uncertain” evening, on Friday 30 of November, presented three scenarios for possible futures of Alkantara. Scenario 1: venue - guide tour through Alkantara’s building in 2019, by Sasa Asentic and Pedro Penim. Scenario 2: project based organisation - with 7 timeframes from 2007 until 2019, by Bojana Cvejic and Gustavo Ciriaco. Scenario 3: platform for thinking - the press conference on 30 November 2019, the day when the building has been acquired from the city, by Ana Dzokic and Claudia Jardim. Then there was a documentary by Bojana Cvejic, Claudia Jardim and Federica Porello about Alkantara and Dancas na cidade; and a photographic research on more then 70 spaces in Lisbon used by Alkantara from 1993-2007, by Ana Dzokic, Marc Neelen and Pedro Penim.

After all this, i did a very short audio visual concert (about 5 minutes!) called "It will be a question of...". Using a piezzo microphone on a transparency projector, my hands and the objects that i was using to produce sound (and of course visuals) were projected on a wall. The end of it left a projection with question marks made with screws.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R1i5ED6BePI/AAAAAAAAALE/ohOQ6ruRDfs/s400/it+will+be+a+question+of+02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141062454062708978" /> <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R1ieLT6BeMI/AAAAAAAAAKs/45mgUHx24j8/s400/it+will+be+a+question+of.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141032891802810562" /> On this night there were also several video instalations, one of which, "It could have been tomorrow" by Carlos Pez, had my music as soundtrack. He used an electronic piece called "jumping birds", one of the "cristalized improvisations" that i composed back in 1990!

The last night, Saturday 1 of December, was called "Performing the space" and featured a very nice performance with the same name by Sasa Asentic and Gustavo Ciriaco, with the participation of Federica Porello, involving the audience and the space. There was also a great energetic and exciting solo concert by Tarek, and another solo concert by myself.

In this concert, also called "performing the space", i used objects that i found in the space and the space itself in order to produce sound. This was the core of my research during this period of 3 weeks, not only as performance material but also for video: i videotaped these and prepared some software in order to be able to play live music with video projections of the sound sources. This way, my concert had an acoustic first part (me playing the objects) and a video second part (me playing the clips of the ojects).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/R1ihpD6BeNI/AAAAAAAAAK0/y-sstKGZUR0/s400/performing+the+space.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141036701438802130" />

This night i put up again "It will be a question of...". He stayed at my place and during this time we started working on a new creation: "Lulu" (Frank Wedekind's play adapted by Alban Berg for his opera, or the silent movie from Pabst, staring Louise Brooks). This musical choreography of Mark Tompkins will be premiered in the Fall of 2008 by his company I.D.A., with Mark singing live the different male characters. For the moment he's still searching the ideal actress / singer for the role of Lulu. I'll be doing the music and working on the songs together with Mark. During his staying in Lisbon we worked on 3 songs ("have you ever loved", "if not you" and "little lulu") and we are more than happy with the results. Click here to listen to a demo of one of the songs: have u ever loved in your life (Lulu)

Apart from this homework, we had some rehearsals with our band "Mark Lewis & The Standards" and we did 2 concerts in Lisbon: on the 24 October at Musicbox and on the 27 at Fábrica do Braço de Prata. Both were great gigs; personally, i prefered the warm athmosphere of the second one.

Emotional Blackmail Mark Lewis Standards
Colocado por monyque

Mark Lewis & The Standards live in Vienna, October 2006

live impro at Fábrica do Braço de Prata (Lisbon)

Fábrica do Braço de Prata is a great new venue in Lisbon: a huge building with 14 rooms for exihibitions, instalations, concerts, bookstore, bar & restaurant and... free parking place!!! On the 19th of October i played a free improv gig with Zé Bruno Parrinha (clarinet), Rodrigo Pinheiro (grand piano), Miguel Leiria Pereira(doublebass)& myself (electric guitar). Since Miguel is mostly a classic music doublebass player, the overall impro often took tonal directions, sometimes almost romantic, which in a way were a chalenge for the other musicians but at the same time provided a very pleasant athmosphere that the audience much apreciated.

Lost & Found live in Terrassa (Barcelona), 5 October 2007

Another gig of the duo "Lost & Found" in the context of Tensdansa Festival in Terrassa (near Barcelona). This duo with Mark Lewis Tompkins and myself started in June 2006. It’s a kind of pocket version of "Mark Lewis & The Standards". We play some of the songs of the Standards with different arrangements and we use videos that I did both as visual background and soundtrack. But we also did some original songs and later the Standards started to play these too. So it works both ways. So far, Lost & Found performed in Vienna, Ljubljana (Slovenia), Berlin, Girona (Spain), Paris and now in Terrassa (Spain). In April 2008 we will play in Toulouse (France).

After the gig in Terrassa I spend some very nice days in Barcelona with my wife Cathrin. Each of us is supposed to present a solo work and also get involved in colaborations with the other artists. Like last year, we have the whole building of Tromsø Kunstvorening to set up instalations and events.

My solo work this year was a sound sculpture, "Self-Portrait with feet and head (mixed technique on mutant portuguese guitar, August 2007)".

The sound is a recording of myself playing solo the mutant portuguese guitar. My hands were made of plaster with the help of Hege and Nuno Olim. The shoes are just my own shoes. I did the video of my head this summer, with loops of my face in front and, in the background, shootings of my holidays with family and friends at the south coast of Portugal, as well as images of the party for the celebration of 50 years of happy marriage of my parents.
Apart from the instalation itself, there was each night a moment where i would move away my shoes, my plaster hands and the TV with my head, to start playing a 20 minute solo concert. The end of the concert was a dialogue between myself and my video head, which caused surprise and laughter in the audience

The other artists participating were Alda Snopek, who presented a magic 3D video projection evolving in very slow movements inside a big dark room. Alice Daquet, who shoted a short film in Tromso and presented it in a small cabin for 1 viewer at a time, soundtrack composed by herself. Amund Sveen, who built a tree with a huge number of hanging speakers, transmiting radio voices from different countries; Elisabeth Brun, who proposed a radio broadcast where artists and audience became the journalists themselves. Heine Røsdal Avdal, who made a landscape using moss and tiny little people; Yukiko, a japanese dancer who participated last year, was also with us: she is the wife of Heine and helped him setting up his landscape room; their son Leo (the spiderboy) was also around. Kristin Mellem proposed intimate concerts inside a tent. Laure Bonicel, dressed with vegetable elements and dancing in slow movements along the building. Liv Ragnhild Kjellman, who proposed a kind of talk show where people from the audience would tell about weird experiences of life. Nuno Olim, realtime drawing projected on a wall, most of the times interacting with people from the audience. And Torgeir Husevaag, who spend his time doing poker performances playing with the audience, his bets following some previous charts that he had been working on before.

Apart from the individual works, i got involved in a dynamic and short "4match" Portugal vs Norway performance, which was the opening of each night. The "match" teams were myself on bass guitar + Nuno Olim in video, versus Amund Sveen in percussions and Nicholas Horne (who was one of the guys from the technical team) on video.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/RuUpLUE0r8I/AAAAAAAAAJE/bR_07rKQ800/s400/4matchnorwayteam.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108534626665934786" />Actually this concept comes from my friend Antonio Jorge Gonçalves, who came up with this idea during the Camp festival in Portugal, 2005. The 2 teams are facing each other, a white sheet is placed between them like a tennis net, the videos are projected there and seen from both sides. The audience is split in two, behind each team.

I also participated each night in two of the concerts proposed by Kristin Mellem at her tent. For this, I built a very nice instrument made out of streched strings between two walls. Together with the marvelous electronics of Ludo Engels (who was also the technical director of the festival) and the voice of Kristin, we did very quiet and introspective music for 15 minutes in each performance.

Then there were as well some small interactions sometimes with Laure, the vegetable woman; my favorite one was when i made some grass rain on her while she was dancing.

Each night ended with colective improvisation performance. The first night was quite energetic and cool, second night was too messy, third night was brilliant and everything seemed like having been previously choreographed, last night was sometimes confusing but still fine i guess. I was involved in these impros not only as a musician (using amplified objects) but also as a performer.

Thanx a lot to the production team: Andries, Gunnlaug, Kåre and of course Hege and Mariane. And Ludo and Nicholas for the technicalities!... Thanx to Bjørn for accomodating me.

yes, i had once more a great great time in Tromsø :-)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/RuPfDkE0r3I/AAAAAAAAAIc/LtTjd_MsZSo/s400/chalkboard.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5108171654684782450" />

Nuno Rebelo: guitarUlrich Mitzlaff: celloFranziska Schroeder: saxPedro Rebelo: pianoLive at Goethe Institut, Lisbon, 20 July 2007

infortunately there wasn't much audience, but what a great concert it was! This was the first festival organised by experimental music label Creative Sources. Because i was so busy, i couldn't see the other days of the festival, but the 2 concerts i've seen in the day we performed were really good: first it was António Chaparreiro (el. guitar) + Hernani Faustino (doublebass) + Travassos (circuit bending) + Miguel Bernardo (clarinet). Second gig was Eduardo Lala (trombone) + Gil Gonçalves (tuba) + João Pinto (laptop) + Plan (turntable). Our own concert felt great, Adriana played a prepared Zither that blended perfectly with my mutant portuguese guitar. We weren't afraid to have once in a while an harmonic aproach to the abstract sound material and it worked quite well. It wasn't the first time the 2 of us played together, since we played a couple of times together in the context of Ernesto Rodrigues "Variable Geometry Orchestra", but it was the first time in a smaller ensemble.

The new 7 wonders

The new 7 wonders of the world were chosen yesterday in a big event in Lisbon. I confess here that this kind of events don't mean anything to me. Nevertheless i was engaged to compose music for 4 films of 1'20" to promote Portugal in this context. One should be simphonic, another one urban, thrid one should be a nice pop and the last one should be electronic / thecnological. So i was quite busy the past weeks, writting a score for simphonic orquestra, recording it, and then creating 3 new music pieces out of it, within the characteristics that were asked.

The whole process wasn't easy the whole time, quite stressed (I finished the last piece two days ago...), but in the end the result was quite nice.

Mark Lewis & The Standards live in Uzès, France, 21 June 2006

On the 21th of June, Mark Tompkins performed his danse piece "Animal-mâle" at Uzès Danse Festival. Since the music in this piece is mainly songs from Mark Lewis & The Standards (yes, Mark Tompkins is Mark Lewis), the band was invited to do a concert later that night. So, Vitor Rua, Alex Cortez, Fred Ferreira and myself, we travelled to this very nice little town in the south of France. We found there a very nice and warm human athmosphere around the festival, nice people, a general happiness flowing in the air... I met some people i know from other places and other moments, like Tania Carvalho and Luis (portuguese dancers), Gaetan Boulourde and his wife Clara Villalobos (Gaetan is a bass player and a danser, Clara is a choreographer), Josette Pisani (from Marseille Objectif Danse), Laure Bonicel (who i worked with in Brussels and in Tromso), and of course Mark and his Animals.

The concert venue was very nice, a stage build in a horse training place. We played better than ever, it was indeed our very best concert so far! And the audience response couldn't be better. Little by little, people start abandoning their chairs to come closer to the stage and start to dance. By the end of the concert we had a bunch of people sweating and dancing wild in front of us. We had 3 encores and still being asked for more! It was fantastic!

Next day we saw a solo dance piece by Thomas Lehmen, called "Lehmen Lernt" which i liked a lot.

(to see videos of Mark Lewis & The Standards, check previous posts in this blog, there are 2 videos around on January and February 2007)

21 to 27 May 2007, residency in Tromso (Norway)

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/RmIYg1lYhiI/AAAAAAAAAGs/W3bSLmnwTAQ/s200/24052007(003).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071643082791355938" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/RmIYhVlYhjI/AAAAAAAAAG0/YZVVtnp5FH4/s200/26052007(002).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5071643091381290546" />
i was again in Tromso, in the north of Norway, for a week of residency together with the other artists that will participate in 4x4 festival over there in August. The ladies went away a little bit after we started playing... we played a little bit more for our friend Ricardo. Then we stoped and chated for a while. They claim they are the fastest to deliver your luggage; it's true; but my new Gibson SG arrived in Paris with a big big crack in the body... shit!...

Anyway, while in Paris i split my time between reharsals and soundchecks at Pompidou center and then taking the subway to go to Bobigny (in the outskirts of Paris) to do the same thing for Lost & Found.

The two concerts of Separados Frutos (11 and 12 May) were realy great. We played very well and intensively, though in the second concert there were some problems with the sampler that stoped working for a while, but it was not serious stuff... we managed to deal with this situation by providing more musical material from the acoustic instruments and i believe no one noticed this short problem. Nevertheless, there wasn't much people in the audience... and playing in the big room of Pompidou Center for a small audience of around 70 people, each night, makes it difficult to warm up and feel the presence of the audience as an extra drive to enhance the energy that we put out when playing...

On saturday 12 of May, as i leave the Pompidou Center stage, i gotta run to Bobigny for my second gig that night. I start playing as soon as i arrive there and i had a great kick for this first concert of Lost & Found (a songs duo with Mark Tompkins
on vocals + my videos as background). I can't say the same about second concert of Lost & Found on sunday 13 May. I was more tired, i didn't have the adrenaline of the day before... But Mark felt better and prefered this second gig. The audience was great and very warm both days.

Nuno Rebelo + Katharina Franck,live at Akademie der Kunste, Berlin

After a few days rehearsing at Katharina's studio in Berlin, we opened the festival "Horspiel voche" (week of radio pieces) with our duo concert of spoken word on the 21st of April. "Nazaré, nicht der stadt, die frau" (see a previous post in March) was a big success. We performed at the big room of Akademie der Kunste and had a standing ovation from the audience. I believe there should be between 300 or 400 people, not bad! Katharina spoke her text with her expressive and soft voice, i played the mucis on the mutant portuguese guitar and amplified objects, with some background tapes. Since i had a "partition" with all the details i had to take care during the concert, this was the first concert in my life that i was obliged to wear glasses!

Here is a review: “And from time to time the radio also shows that it is capable of transgressing borders and offering something other than its usual pre-packaged productions. Nazaré – not the city, the woman, a radio play produced for BR, is transformed by its author Katharina Franck together with musician Nuno Rebelo into an acclaimed live performance, which pays tribute to host country Portugal with great narrative intensity.”
(Christian Deutschmann. type='text'>Nazaré - nicht die Stadt, die Frau

(Nazaré - not the vilagge, the woman)

I'm now working on this spoken word piece for radio, together with German singer Katharina Franck. She wrote this amazing biography of Nazaré, who was the maid at Katharina's family while they lived in Portugal during the 70's. The historical background of the story is mainly the portuguese revolution period, and the biography of Nazaré is in part fiction, in part real.

This piece was comissioned by Bayerische Rundfunk radio station and it will be premiered on Bayern 2 Radio on the 4th of May, at 20h30m. A few days before, we will play this piece live in a duo concert at Studiobühne der Akademie der Künste, Berlin, on the 21th of April, at 20h.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_NqVDDbEaCpU/RecBUcS7IgI/AAAAAAAAADk/1q9FcnCR06Y/s320/KF.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5036996158941766146" />

new video of Mark Lewis & The Standards

i just received from my friend Gilles Toutevoix (Monyque TeVe) his video of the song "Emotional Blackmail" (Mark Lewis & The Standards). Although my main task was to setup and present Turning Points, (see down in this post for more details about it), I ended up participating in many different small performances: a duo with Anja Kowalsky (her playing guitar and singing 2 songs and myself playing percussion on dishes and cups); a trio performance with Lawrence and Anja, making squeeches and other weird noises on Lawrence’s spinning wheels (ending with playing a Beatles record with the song Norwegian wood); an electric guitar rock solo at Jon Leuven’s Disco room; a collective improvisation each night featuring myself on electric guitar, Anja on voice, Lawrence on live set making, Els van Riel on video, Domenico Justino and Yukiko (dance) and Kristin (text).

Saturday memories with blue rumours (a choreography of Paulo Ribeiro, live music: Nuno Rebelo & Vitor Rua) – although we did most part of the tour in 2005, we still had performances of this piece in 2006: in Frankfurt, Coimbra and Glasgow. It was sad to see the end of the tour arriving, cause we always had a lot of fun playing it and a great time hanging around with the dancers and crew.

Pocketbook of Lightning (Nuno Rebelo / Marco Franco duo) – We’ve been playing together since more than a decade, most of it with Marco on the drums and myself on electric guitar, sometimes with guest musicians. I should also mention that for a short period (some years ago) we did some concerts with Marco on sax, instead of drums. In 2006 we started using other sound sources together with our main instruments: Marco started using some analog electronic devices (theremin, cracklebox and other stuff) and I included amplified objects. This year we did some great gigs in duo and some other with invited musicians: Carlos Zingaro (violin), Gianni Gebbia (sax) and Audrey Chen (cello and voice). Carlos and Gianni are old friends we’ve played with in the past; as to Audrey, what a pleasure to meet her and play with!

Pocketbook of Lightning (Nuno Rebelo + Marco Franco)

Surf Faces (Vitor Rua / Nuno Rebelo duo) – two gigs with this quadraphonic soundscape project. First one in Lux (Lisbon) in the context of Way Festival, second one at Casa dos Dias d’Água (Lisbon), for the closing event of a series of exhibitions and debates organised by the Portuguese Architects Association .

surf faces live at Casa dos dias d'Água, Lisbon, 2006

Turning Points – In 2005 I did Turning Point 1 for electric guitar and amplified objects and later Turning Points 2, 3 & 4 for six mutant Portuguese guitars. In 2006, being invited by the sculptor Miguel Palma to participate in “Tuning”, a collective artistic work on a car, I chose to intervene on the wheels of the car, using them as Tu®ning Points 5, 6, 7 & 8. Check the video and find out what I did. This was so far the only time that a turntable wasn’t used as “player” of the installation.
Later this year I did another presentation of Turning Points, this time in Tromso (Norway) in the frame of 4x4 festival. I had a great room all devoted to my installation, some good lightning and it consisted of three Turning Points. Turning Point 9 (for three amplified objects), Turning Point 10 (for eight pieces of Norwegian wood) and Turning Point 11 (for two guitars). Altogether, they played a very nice ongoing music full of rich sound material, rhythmic and aleatory elements and spatialization. The spinning lights, and the moving shadows they created, added a hypnotic layer to the installation.

Turning Points 1 to 11

So Happy Together – only one gig this year with this Zen project, featuring Vera Mantero on voice, Vitor Rua and myself on mutant Portuguese guitars, plus my own video animations on the 16 Zen poems of Herberto Helder. The gig happened in the context of Mira festival, in Toulouse (France).

Mark Lewis & The Standards – two great gigs this year, one in Salamanca (Spain) in the context of Festival de las Artes de Castilla y Léon, and another one in Vienna, for the anniversary celebrations of Tanzquartier Wien. It was very special in Salamanca, cause all the dancers of Mark’s company were present (Mark was performing his choreography “Animal” a few days later in the same festival). Since the dancers know the songs very well (cause these songs are in “Animal”), they had the chance to see it live for the first time. In April 2007 we’ll play in Paris and hopefully some gigs in Portugal too.

Mark Lewis & The Standards live in Vienna, October 2006

Lost & Found – this duo project with Mark Lewis Tompkins and myself started in 2006. It’s a kind of pocket version of the Standards. We play some of the songs of the Standards with different arrangements and we use videos that I did both as visual background and soundtrack. But we also did some original songs and later the Standards started to play these too. So it works both ways. Our first gig was in June, in Vienna, organised by Tanzquartier Wien. They liked it so much that they invited us to go back for their anniversary celebrations in October, but we said no and proposed the Standards instead - and so it happened. Later this year we did more gigs in Ljubljana (Slovenia), Berlin and Girona (Spain). In May 2007 we’ll play in Paris.

Audible Movement, Visible Sound – Mark Tompkins and I have been teaching together this workshop which focuses the grey zones of cross-path and contamination of the performing body regarding movement and sound making, in a context of improvisation – or real time composition. We started in 2000 and have done it three times in Vienna, Strasbourg, Lisbon and Bucarest. In 2006 we spend two great weeks in Ljubljana (during the football world cup!) doing this workshop at the amazing Kino Ciska, an old abandoned cinema. It’s always a great adventure for me to be involved in this workshop, since I get in touch with myself in terms of body performance. This is an area that for years was unknown to me and that I could never imagine that I had any talent at all to do it… But doing this teaching (or should I say training?) with Mark since 2000, I’m getting more and more at ease to do it; plus I’m getting very encouraging comments from Mark and from the dancers who participate. In Ljubljana I felt for the first time very comfortable to improvise as a dancer, even in the final presentation of the work, doing a performance for an audience. More, more, I want more of this!

Cine-concert homage to Carlos Paredes – The Portuguese guitar is a kind of a 12 string big mandolin, and the most known traditional instrument from Portugal. It stands as a national symbol. And Carlos Paredes was the most outstanding player of this instrument, playing his own and his father’s compositions. Personally, his music is the one where I can deeply find the Portuguese soul, whatever that is.
This cine-concert was done in 2005 at ZDB (Lisbon) as a single event to do an homage to Carlos Paredes. It includes the projection of “Movimentos Perpétuos”, a documentary by Edgar Pêra about Carlos Paredes. In between the projection of the documentary there are several live musical performances about 15 minutes each. First one is the duo João Lima (Portuguese guitar) + Jean Marc Dercle (one string bass); João is a great player and his style is influenced by the art of Paredes. Second performance it’s me, doing a solo improvisation on mutant Portuguese guitar (since 1993 I’ve been applying my knowledge of experimental techniques – mostly developed within the electric guitar - to this instrument). Third performance is the duo Dead Combo (check their page here at myspace). There is a last performance with all of us playing together. During all the performances there are live video projections, with Edgar mixing live images shot on stage with some pre-recorded material. This homage to Carlos Paredes is a very lively one. Not only one can learn more about his personality and enjoy his own playing in the projected images, but also presents different approaches on how his influence is still alive in the hands of some Portuguese musicians.
In 2006 we were invited to play this show two nights at CAPA (Faro / Portugal). We had a great time doing it and received both nights a standing ovation from the audience. Thus, we wish that more presentations of this homage might happen in the future.

Video work – having seen a concert of “So Happy together” with my videos, theatre director Paulo Filipe Torres invited me to do videos for his play “Tanto Mar”, presented at D. Maria National Theatre (Lisbon). It was the first time in my life that I participated as something else than composer in a theatre play and also the first time – and so far the only one – that I was invited to participate in something as a video artist. Doing this work I had the chance to develop furthermore my skills of video editing and go deeper into what is my personal video language. Later this year I did all the videos for Lost & Found, my duo with Mark Lewis Tompkins. And when Ana Albuquerque invited me to do some ambient music for her jewellery exhibition I proposed her doing video instead (check this video at my page at myspace). So,in fact, I did a lot of video work this year.

Granular – I was still in the board of directors of Granular in the first half of the year, but I resigned due to different perspectives between me and the board of directors about what I think this association should be and how it should work. Having said this, I’m still an active member of the association, participating in events that we organize. In this context, I played amplified objects in a gig at Museu do Chiado (Lisbon). This concert was part of “Der Gelbe Klang”, a series of concerts organised by Granular at Contemporary Arts Museum do Chiado. Our concert was a homage to Dada movement and was called “We are a furious wind”, featuring also Américo Rodrigues (voice), Pedro Tudela and Miguel Carvalhais (laptops). In this gig I shaved my hair on stage, amplifying and processing the sound of the shaver. Another concert was within Granular’s festival Metasonic (at Goethe Institut, Lisbon). Here I played (electric guitar) with Rodrigo Amado and Paulo Curado (saxes), Carlos Santos and André Gonçalves (laptops) and José Oliveira (percussion).

Composition – Since I spent most of my working time at home doing video, I didn’t do much composing this year and, unfortunately once again, no CDs of mine were released. A couple of minor things I did were the music for the opening of Musicbox (see another post in this blog for more info and to listen to it) and the music for the campaign of the left-wing candidate Francisco Louçã, to the Portuguese presidential elections. Anyway I finished 2006 composing 4 music pieces for Drumming, a percussion ensemble. The première of these pieces will be on 19 january at Teatro Viriato, Viseu, Portugal.

Wordsong no Musicbox

Zapping

I just finished composing the percussion pieces comissioned by the percussion ensemble "Drumming" , for their performance "Zapping" (a tribute to Frank Zappa).

I used some recordings of Zappa's voice (interviews) that I found in the net and that will be used as a background soundtrack on which the percussion players will play.

I composed 4 pieces, a total of 10 minutes of music:

"Love Boat" (for 7 percussionists - xylophone, 2 marimbas, vibraphone, glockenspiel, gong, triangle, tubular bells and drums)

"Bad Shape" (for 6 percussionists - xylophone, 2 marimbas, 2 vibraphones, glockenspiel and drums)

"Many Z Sounds" (for 5 percussionists - xylophone, 2 marimbas and 2 vibraphones)

"The End of the World" (for 6 percussionists - temple blocks, woodblock, claves, bongo, tom-toms, cymbals, triangle and gong) > > > > > > click here to listen

The première will be in 19 and 20 January 2007 at Teatro Viriato (Viseu / Portugal).

Meet Jewellry

Ana Albuquerque's jewellery exhibition ended on the 10th December.

Lado A - Nightlife
Lado B - Afternight life

starting my blog

so here i am, starting my very first blog...

general subjects will be posted in english and local subjects will be in portuguese.

for the moment i'm back home, composing music for "Drumming", a portuguese percussion ensemble.
